Gum Grafting

There are a lot of things that go into play when it comes to having good oral health. It is not all about having straight teeth or a white smile. To have a healthy outcome, it is important to have a healthy base. For your teeth, your base is your gums. Your gums take just as much of a beating as your teeth do with life’s daily rigors, and it is important to keep them healthy.

Unfortunately, gum disease affects a large portion of the population, and many people may not know that they live with it. One of the signs of gum disease is gum recession, meaning your gums pull away from the teeth, exposing the tooth’s root. Because we believe your gums should be just as important as your teeth when it comes to maintenance, we offer gum grafting to our patients. Dr. William Vu and Dr. Andrew Madej are trained and capable of performing the procedure, right here in our Hinton facility.

Gum grafting involves replacing the gum tissue that has been lost with healthy gum tissue. By doing this, it encourages your body to produce healthy gum tissue, while also reattaching itself to your teeth. If your receding gums are not taken care of, it may lead to sensitivity, root decay and overtime in some cases can cause early tooth loss. Our doctors can use an allograft from a tissue bank to cover the exposed root surfaces of teeth and grow back gum tissue that was lost. Allografts undergo a stringent sterilization process and have been approved by Health Canada.  Alternatively, Dr. William Vu and Dr. Andrew Madej can spin your own blood with a centrifuge and create a fibrin membrane and attach to the areas of your teeth where the gums have receded. In the end, your gums are on the road to better health.
